Released from Prison November 1931 and Destitute

Once again, William wrote to the Repat. Dept. on 23rd December 1931, asking for his cheques to be sent to c/o Postmaster, Midland Junction, about 17km northeast of Perth. In the letter he stated he will be leaving Perth District for permanent residence in the country.

On 23rd March 1932, the War Office in London, received its long await report of information from Western Australia’s Police on William’s criminal conviction.

William’s “permanent residence in the country” did not last long as he again wrote, on 9th April 1932, to the Repat. Dept., and asked if they could send his cheques c/o The Council Club Hotel, Midland Junction.

On 5th May 1932 a memo appeared, on William’s file at the Repat. Dept. saying that two plain clothes police had called regarding William. He was apparently an inmate of the Blackboy Hill Camp [136a] (about 23 km east of Perth). He’d been there since February and was destitute. William had also assumed the name of “Miller” whilst at the camp. This can only be construed that he was using the name of his half-brother, but it was wrongly spelt.

His half-brother, Millar Buzzard, had died in a shooting accident on his farm east of Moora, W.A. Millar became a Lieut. with the Australian Infantry Force, 12th Field Artillery Brigade, in WW1 and was first posted to Blackboy Hill for his initial training in 1916. Little did he know that William was to assume his name some 12 years after his death at the same camp.

After leaving Blackboy Hill, the next address William used for his cheques was that of Mrs. K.M. Furlong of 151 Wellington St., Perth.

On the electoral roll for 1939, Mrs. Kate Mary Furlong’s occupation was noted as a storekeeper.
